Early Years

Matthew Paul Booth was born on March 14, 1977, in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, South Africa, to parents Paul and Anthea. His father, Paul, was an engineer and semi-professional football player, while his mother, Anthea, worked as a legal secretary.

Matthew's football career began at the age of five, when he joined Fish Hoek AFC.
Cape Town Spurs coach Richard Gomes discovered the lanky teenager during the Bayhill U19 competition in 1994. Booth's towering appearance and dedication piqued Gomes' interest, prompting an offer to practice with the club's young team.
Booth, then 17, trained with the senior squad, who went on to win the league and the BobSave Super Bowl.

Career

Matthew Booth began his professional football career in 1996, with established players like Shaun Bartlett and Craig Rosslee. The Cape Town Spurs and Seven Stars amalgamated in 1999 to form Ajax Cape Town, but Booth was deemed surplus to requirements and was almost sold to Mother City. Instead, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns, where he spent three seasons.

Booth moved to England on loan to Wimbledon in 2001, however he never played for the first team, only appearing in reserve games. He described his tenure there as miserable, owing to the club's instability over its relocation to Milton Keynes. In 2002, he moved to Russia and played for Rostov and Krylia Sovetov, battling against prominent players such as Branislav Ivanović, Vágner Love, and Jan Koller. Booth withdrew from professional football on June 19, 2014, despite having the option of renewing his contract.

Internationally, Booth made his debut for South Africa on February 20, 1999, against Botswana in the Cosafa Castle Cup. He got 37 caps and scored one goal. Despite missing the 2002 FIFA World Cup due to a knee injury, he was included in the 2010 FIFA World Cup team as an unused substitute. He also led the under-23 team at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Booth, famed for his height, was regarded as an important player when playing opponents who were also tall.

The media dubbed him the “White Knight” since he was the only white player on South Africa's national team at the time.
